On January 1st the reservations for Salt Creek Campground open up for the year, and this time we were ready to book some camping spots. We weren’t trying to book peak season time, when we’ll be other places this year, but some spring trips and another trip with the boys were in our sights. We have a LOT on our plate right now (finish the house, rebuild the deck, summer Africa travel plans, Captains license for Croatia charter), but still wanted to get some camping in. We booked 2 weekends in Mar, 2 weeks in April to Yosemite, 1 weekend in May and 1 weekend in June.
One of the things we learned while out cruising our boat is that every day was a school day. Sometimes those were good lessons, occasionally not so much. We’re starting to learn that camping with our little travel trailer also has many lessons to be learned. When I booked sites at Salt Creek this year I thought we’d try some spaces down on the tongue, instead of up above where the big RVs park. One of the major reasons we went small with the trailer was so we could fit into smaller places and have more choices. Our truck and trailer easily fit into the 40′ pad offered in some of the lower sites at Salt Creek.

We selected site 66, which has a 40′ parking pad. And from the view on the website, plenty of length. But what I didn’t notice was the two trees side by side midway into the spot. And what I couldn’t see was the tree at the front of the site and right across the drive.

The campground map shows “Trees” in the middle, but doesn’t show they’re all the way around the drive and close in the sites. While I love trees, we were pretty surprised we’d miscalculated the opportunity to take Nonnie’s Diner into one of these sites. With two cars blocked behind us waiting, Rob took three tries at it and finally went around to clear the drive and give us some time to ponder a new approach.

We finally figured out when to put which tire wheels at what spot, and Rob carefully executed the plan and backed her right into the spot. And what a gorgeous spot, and so worth the time to figure it out. Unfortunately, we’ve got plans next weekend again at Salt Creek, and are not sure we can fit into the spot we have reserved. And Clallam County won’t let you make or change reservations within 7 days, so there we are. Stay tuned, we may have reports about doing another shimmy move into an even tighter situation this time next week.

Once we were finally settled in it was time to do what we came for – socializing with friends! Cherie had recently sold her Baba40 and was now traveling by land in her beautiful Lance travel trailer. After years of having her as a sailing friend with a sister ship, now we’re camping pals, and this was our first time out together. Along with her were two of her friends in their newly fitted out (and also gorgeous) travel van.

We ate, drank, visited, ate some more and had a really really lovely time. Saturday afternoon we were ducking under cover as a few rain squalls rolled over us, but true to Cherie’s prediction, as soon as she dug out her rain coat all the squalls were gone.

Sunday morning before we left was low tide, so Rob & I got some time hanging out down at the tide pools finding some new and interesting things to look at. To anyone looking for a fun and interesting camp site, Salt Creek really is becoming one of our favorite spots. We’re lucky it’s only 2 hours from home out there. And we’ll see how next week goes with our other site (#61) and how we do getting into there.
